ARE YOU ABLE TO HELP US WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
VOLUNTEER TO ASSIST WHEN POSSIBLE ON FRIDAY AFTERNOONS? - We need active helpers to mark the registers, give out the name tags, fit collars and leads, and hand out the training treats and other general assistance. It would be a real bonus if you speak some Zulu and if you have any dog training experience or animal skills, but it’s not essential.
DONATE “TRAINING TREATS” PREFERABLY ON A REGULAR BASIS? - We use any brand of dry dog food to instantly reward correct behaviour at training and we send handlers home with enough treats to practice what they have learned each day for the next week.
SOURCE, OR DONATE COLLARS AND LEADS, OLD OR NEW? - Typically, new dogs to the class either have no collar or maybe an old belt, piece of string, or even wire round their necks. Their leads are invariably heavy chains. The first thing we do is give them a proper collar and lead. If they lose it we charge them R5 for a replacement. We are currently issuing up to a dozen collars and leads of mostly small and medium sizes every week.
SPONSOR THE COST OF STERILISING A DOG? - We encourage responsible ownership which includes the sterilising of pets. The subsidised cost of R250 for the procedure is however beyond the means of many owners.
DONATE DE-WORMING AND TICK AND FLEA REMEDIES?
SPONSOR THE COST OF RABIES VACCINATIONS FOR REGULAR VOLUNTEER WORKERS? – We would like to provide our regular volunteers with protection against possible rabies infection. Each set of vaccinations costs R1000 and we have around 10 regular volunteers.
SPONSOR THE COST OF A TRAILER (R10000) OR DONATE A TRAILER IN ROADWORTHY CONDITION? - Needed to help convey our equipment to and from training sessions.
SPONSOR THE COST OF A PORTABLE GAZEBO (R1500)? – Needed to provide some shade on hot days.
During training we take the opportunity to teach handlers about basic animal welfare issues and responsibility for their animals. We have all found this to be a most rewarding and uplifting experience and we have some star dog handlers in the making. They are so keen. They just need YOUR help. The dogs soon learn to love training day — they sometimes arrive on their own and wait at the gate pleading to be let in to join the class! Imagine the long term impact of this initiative on the lives of township dogs and their owners.
